SkinPen® Microneedling Post-Treatment Instructions

To ensure the best results and reduce the risk of irritation, please follow these guidelines before your appointment:

7–14 Days Before Treatment:

Avoid Accutane (isotretinoin) if recently used (must be cleared by provider—often 6 months+ wait)
Discontinue retinoids/retinol, tretinoin, adapalene, Tazarotene
Avoid chemical peels, lasers, waxing, or aggressive exfoliation
Postpone treatment if you have active cold sores, acne flare, or skin infection in the area

3–5 Days Before Treatment:

Avoid AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acid)
Avoid scrubs, exfoliating brushes, or at-home peels
Limit sun exposure and tanning beds
Stop use of irritating active skincare products

24–48 Hours Before Treatment:

Avoid alcohol (can increase redness and sensitivity)
Avoid blood-thinning supplements/medications if approved by your provider (e.g., fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin—ONLY if medically safe to stop)
Do not shave or wax the treatment area (unless instructed)

Day of Treatment:

Arrive with clean skin (no makeup, sunscreen, lotion, or skincare products)
Avoid caffeine if you are prone to sensitivity or flushing (optional)
Stay well hydrated
Inform your provider of any new medications or skin changes

Important Notes:

Treatment may be postponed if skin is irritated, sunburned, or compromised
Always disclose medical history, including autoimmune conditions, herpes simplex history, or use of blood thinners
SPF use is essential leading up to treatment

SkinPen® Microneedling Post-Treatment Instructions

Your skin may feel sensitive after treatment. Proper aftercare is essential for healing and optimal results.

First 24 Hours

Expect redness, warmth, tightness, or mild swelling (similar to a sunburn)
Do not touch, rub, or pick the skin
Avoid makeup and skincare products unless approved by your provider
Use only gentle, hydrating products recommended by your provider
Avoid heavy sweating, exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and steam rooms
Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid pressure on treated areas

24–72 Hours After Treatment

Continue to avoid makeup if possible (at least 24 hours minimum)
Use a gentle cleanser and hydrating moisturizer
Avoid retinol, acids (AHA/BHA), vitamin C, and exfoliants
No waxing, scrubs, or aggressive skincare
Mild dryness, flaking, or rough texture may occur as skin heals

Days 3–7

Skin may feel dry or slightly rough as it renews
Continue hydration-focused skincare only
Begin reintroducing active products only when cleared by your provider
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds

Sun Protection (Very Important)

Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ or higher daily
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 1 week
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if outdoors

What to Expect

Redness usually resolves in 24–72 hours
Visible improvement in tone and texture begins within 1–2 weeks
Collagen remodeling continues for 4–6 weeks after treatment

When to Contact Your Provider

Excessive swelling lasting more than 72 hours
Signs of infection (increasing pain, pus, fever)
Unusual blistering or severe irritation
